Waggy joins Frank Lampard's Derby Revolution
Congratulations to Martyn Waghorn on completing his transfer to Derby County today. ‘Waggy’ has signed a 3-year contract at Pride Park, keeping him with the Rams until the Summer of 2021.
He follows in the footsteps of fellow KeySports client George Evans who completed his transfer to Derby last week. It means Derby now have three KeySports clients in their squad, Martyn and George are now the teammates of Derby No.1 Scott Carson.
Speaking about his latest signing, Manager Frank Lampard said: “I’m delighted to see Martyn Waghorn become a Derby County player – I think this is a big signing for us.
“He has been sought-after all summer and we’ve managed to bring him here, which is fantastic. We sold the club to him and, importantly, he wanted to come here and that’s the sort of player that I want in the squad.
“Martyn has many great qualities and he has been pretty prolific over the last few years in front of goal. He is a real all-round striker and last year we saw not only could he score goals in the Championship but create them as well.”
Waggy has been in demand all Summer after a terrific season with Ipswich Town, where he scored 16 goals in 46 games last season. If you add assists to that total, it would mean that our man contributed to over half of Ipswich’s total goals scored last season, 29 of 57 goals So it comes as no surprise that a number of clubs were vying for his signature!
Martyn’s journey to Pride Park has seen him represent a total of 10 clubs, including local club Sunderland, Leicester City and Scottish Giants Rangers where he became a terrace hero after firing in 20 goals as the Gers won the Championship to return to the SPL.
His journey has featured many ups and downs which has ultimately made him a better player and person, Derby have bought themselves a top player…a class act.
We’re very proud of you Martyn, all the best this season to you and your new club. Be Exceptional.
